白宫花园
每年四月和十月(春秋两季)的某个周末,白宫南面的花园都要向公众开放,而且只需要在当天早一点去领票(免费)就可以进入,不象申请参观白宫那么麻烦。也算是与总统府进距离接触了吧。 四月已经进入华盛顿地区的旅游季节,游人果然很多。警察、工作人员和Secrect Service的人员也多。进门要安检,不过没有检查身份证件,随身带的包也是大概摸了摸,不象仔细查的样子。进门后人手一本小册子,介绍白宫花园,以及其中所植的树木的位置、历史。 可供人参观的主要有三个花园:白宫东面的Jacqueline Kennedy Garden;西面的Rose Garden;还有南面角落里的Children’s Garden。说是参观,其实是围起来让人只能远观的,连草坪都不能碰。 从东面进入,立即就可以看到白宫南面的门廊(Portico)和巨大的圆形草坪。草坪中央空旷,边缘种植着各种树木,立着不少照片。这些树大多是历届总统及家人种下的。草坪旁边通往白宫的小路上展示着几把铲,不知道是否是种树用的。环绕草坪的一圈黑色,踩上去软软的,是用于锻炼的跑道(小布什骑自行车,估计用得少)。 东西两边的花园是举行正式仪式的地方,所以根本不让人走进。铁链和警卫守着,不过可以同他们聊天。两边的花园都是长方形。相比之下我更喜欢西边的玫瑰花园。人太多,一不小心人头手就不免进入镜头,也没有时间仔细拍照。 近距离看白宫,的确是很漂亮的房子。不知道住在里面的人有多少时间来欣赏它。 走到草坪的南边,可以看到白宫南面的全景。东南角上还有军乐队表演。南面喷水池边上种的红色郁金香十分娇艳。 西南面角落里有一个非常幽静的小花园,叫Children’s Garden。面积很小,其中有一个小鱼池,几张白色的椅子。不知是谁的主意,花园的小道上镶着铜板,上面印着总统孙子辈的手足掌印。好玩的小孩就一对一对的按上去。我们这些老小孩就看着他们,偷偷笑。 走出白宫,外面的警车、警戒线、围栏、铁链和水泥墩子,一下子就把人与白宫的距离拉开来。回想一下,再看看眼前,房子还是原来的房子,但是感觉却完全不同了。 (照片见Photo section of my MSN space)

莫扎特使你更聪明?
Alison Abbott 在《自然》上发表了一篇新闻报道,介绍了德国近期的一项研究。课题是:是否聆听莫扎特的音乐能使人更聪明? 早在1993年,UC-Irvine的Frances Rauscher在《自然》上发表了一篇论文,报道了在聆听莫扎特音乐10分钟后,人们对空间能力会提高。人们称之为“莫扎特现象”。这一发现无疑给古典音乐带来了商机。我记得在90年代中期买过一盘磁带,“莫扎特使你更聪明”。后来我还不断读到小道消息,分析莫扎特音乐的特点,以及为什么它能让人“更聪明”。我相信很多人都对此深信不移。 最近的研究表明,即使有“莫扎特现象”,其作用都是非常短暂的(不超过20分钟)。而且并不局限于莫扎特的音乐,任何音乐,甚至讲故事的声音都有可能让人“聪明”起来。

07华盛顿樱花节
我好象同樱花有缘,从大学开始,生活学习的地方都有樱花。一年一年过得真快,樱花开放的时节又到了。 拍了这么多年,拍樱花还是觉得无从下手。新上传的照片都是用老婆的数码相机拍的。我用自己的相机也拍了几张,还没有冲印出来。
